Rules for Cellphone Etiquette at the Office

It is important to set clear and formal limitations regarding the use of cell phones in the office. To help everyone be present and productive at work, consider this simple list of rules:

“3 Cs” of cellphone etiquette in the office

1. Cellphone-free Meetings.

  • Face-to-face collaboration is still one of the most effective ways to communicate, which makes it an essential tool in business.
  • Do not bring your phone to a professional lunch – your untrained attention to your customer has a good effect and it can save you time and effort down the road.

2. General manners.

  • Do not use your phone for personal reasons, including texting and social media, during work hours.
  • Keep your phone away from your desk and watch out
Do not interrupt the conversation to take a call – Finish your discussion and answer the call if necessary.

3. Consider your environment.

  • If you leave your phone at your desk, then use a professional ringtone and shut it down.
  • Take personalized calls outside of shared office locations and keep them short.
  • Do not use speakerphone – Use earbud to call and listen to voicemail.
  • Unless it is a tool for your work, Bluetooth headsets prevent you from talking loudly.
Every office is different, so you have to make your rules consistent with your specific circumstances. For example, you may want to allow exceptions for those children or family members who trust them.

Keep control of your cellphone usage
Smartphones are great for staying in touch for business and personal matters, but with everything in one place, it can be difficult to separate work and personal time.

There are two phones for one solution- one for work and one for personal use. Another is to delete all the distracting apps from your phone or to disable notifications.

Or, consider using technology to fight technology. Apple’s new screen time control includes downtime features, and Android has a similar feature called Digital Velabing. When this feature is turned on, you will only receive phone calls and access to the previously selected app. Set your downtime duration during your working period and only select the apps that are required for your work (if any).

You can spend a lot of time on the apps you feel. Once your deadline has been completed, the app is grayed out and can not be opened. You can easily override this feature, but it may be enough to check your phone while on-the-job.

Both Apple and Android also offer a Do Not Disturb feature that silences the phone call and sends all the notifications directly to the Notification Center while bypassing your lock screen. It is designed for use during driving or sleeping, but it can also be used in the office.
